Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
