The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Mixed Feedback
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure updated employees about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a distinct vision.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire text from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the need for a more distinct identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the input to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s ready to deliver on its potential to our audience.
The trust in this project grows every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. After some time of conversations, he officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having devoted the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in welcoming Ben soon. We are all eager to persist seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.
David

The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 together with a early access event. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Face the competition with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that change every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."
The game does not have an official launch window or supported systems, but players can look forward to additional details as development progresses.
