A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
